The first part of this session will cover basic-to-advanced forging techniques, including forge-welding, hole-punching, tenons, and other traditional joinery as well as power hammer use and tool-making. This will culminate in a collection of joinery and texture/pattern samples and the punches, chisels, and tooling to make them. Next, students will complete a number of small technical projects and design prompts to explore the balance between planning and improvisation. These may include household items, simple furniture, or small-scale sculpture. Each student will then synthesize what they have learned and consult individually with the instructor to design a larger project or small series. This workshop is for all experience levels and is intended to expand technical vocabulary and to inspire creativity, especially learning to let the material and processes inform design.
